The Sierra del Rosario was declared a Biosphere Reserve on February 15, 1985 by UNESCO. Inside the Reserve there is an Ecological Research Station. The reserve shows a complex geological structure, with a great diversity of rocks that form different and special soils, which in part determines the endemism of the flora in its landscape, represented mainly by four plant formations such as: evergreen forests, semideciduous forests, xeromorph scrub and pine forests.

Among the species of flora, the visitor can find the small orchid Bletia Purpurea, considered a symbol of the region, and among the avifauna, the Tocororo (Cuban Trogon) our National Bird and the Cartacuba (Cuban Tody). The amphibians are also represented, being significant a small frog Eleuterodactilus limbatus, of only 9 mm, and among the reptiles, the Anolis Vermiculatus stands out.

In addition, they carry out activities with children and young people of Las Terrazas Community: circles of interest on the environment, which talks about birds, educational talks, workshops, participation contests, and the long-awaited celebration for the Day. World Environment, among others, thus raising the environmental education of its inhabitants in order to achieve sustainable development in the region.

Ecological Station: Dedicated to the constant monitoring of the ecosystem, research related to ecological restoration, forestry development, environmental education, avifauna, local development, conservation of agrobiodiversity and various scientific projects, also offering specialized ecotourism Tours.

They link projects to local communities related to the rescue of plant genetic resources to contribute to food security, as well as actions related to sustainable tourism and the biological diversity of ecosystems.
